The Tuesday Drop #33 · Hiring signal · · 4 min read

Salesforce froze engineering. It’s still hiring sellers.

One company, two trends: engineering headcount held flat for two years, while sales keeps growing. The GTM Engineer sits exactly where they meet.

The number: 15,000 Salesforce engineers, flat for about two years. Sales headcount is still growing.

What Benioff said

On Salesforce’s Q1 FY27 earnings call on 28 May, Benioff said the company is growing headcount mainly in sales, while engineering has stayed at about 15,000 for around two years because of AI coding productivity.

“We’re not hiring more engineers, we’re not hiring more GA, we’re mostly expanding only in one area.”

Last week

On 7 August, WARN filings showed 133 more Salesforce job cuts: 59 in Washington and 74 in San Francisco, effective 5 October and mostly in engineering and technical support. The Next Web calls it the company’s third round of 2026, and notes the filings don’t mention AI. Salesforce has about 80,000 employees.

What it means for operators

If the largest CRM company is holding engineering flat and still adding sellers, the scarce skill is someone who can build for a sales team without being a traditional engineer, and who measures their work in pipeline. That describes the GTM Engineer.

“In sales we still scale because there are so many different parts of the market that we have to get to.”
